Am I The Only Paying $3 / Gallon for Gas ?

LP, Anna and I took a little family vacation to waaaaaaaay Lower Alabama this weekend to relax on the beach.

We had a great trip. The place where we stayed looked like a GMC/Chevy dealership. The family cars of choice were the Yukon/Tahoe and Yukon XL/Suburban. I mean, TONS of these mammoth SUV's. Are these folks getting a discount on gas 'cause that's a lot of gas guzzling vehicle to haul around.

  • I believe it. How many were rental vehicles?

I know Hummers are offering a cash back on gas for a year to make purchasing one of their vehicle more appealing. I forgot the total rebate though.

  • Reason why rail transportation needs to improve. I am guessing that millions of people go to Florida every year. They need to have a few rail lines that can go from St Louis to Memphis, to Florida with out all the stops. An express train.

Europe does this and that is what makes it so easy to travel. They have 2 types of trains. Those that make numerous stops and directs. I would pay extra to go direct to florida or even colorado. If it did not take a few days to get there.

  • No rentals as far as I could tell. Mostly locals-- LA, MS, AL vacationers so no need to fly then rent.

Europe is so different than the U.S. If we had to pay what they do for gas and had the real estate restrictions they have then I think our attitudes towards public transportation would change.

I've often said that driving in Memphis has to become extraordinarily inconvenient (no parking, high gas prices, huge traffic, etc.) before people will embrace alternative forms of transportation. But as long as I live 3 miles from work and have ample parking I'll take the Pathy.
